Quel est le géant qui se dresse devant vous ? Quel est le combat auquel vous faites face depuis des années et combien de fois avez-vous perdu ce combat ?
Vous avez tenu vos yeux pendant plusieurs années loin de la pornographie, mais suite à une crise, vous vous retrouvez devant la page d’accueil d’un site pornographique. Vous avez tenu vos mains serrées dans vos poches depuis des mois, mais devant cette dernière provocation, vous sentez tout votre mépris monter dans votre cœur. Vous avez tenu votre langue depuis si longtemps, mais si les gens savaient, leur opinion sur ce frère serait tellement différente…
Pourtant, vous avez lutté, par la prière, la louange, la confession, le jeûne et la reconnaissance, comme cinq pierres prêtes à jaillir de votre fronde. Quels sont les « Goliath » de votre vie ?
Dans 1 Samuel 17, Israël se prépare aussi au combat. De part et d’autre, les camps s’installent et se préparent à se faire face. Un géant sort du milieu des rangs de l’ennemi, trois mètres de haut avec un casque en bronze et une cuirasse d’écailles en bronze de 60 kilos, il propose un deal : plutôt que les deux armées s’affrontent, il propose un combat unique contre lui-même et le vainqueur de ce combat remportera la bataille des deux camps.
Pendant 40 jours, matin et soir, il va les harceler, les mettre sous pression… mais personne n’ose l’affronter. Aucun n’est de taille, le combat est perdu d’avance.
Qui sommes-nous face à Goliath ?
Saül ?
Pour Saül, le combat semble logique, non seulement il est un homme robuste qui dépasse d’une tête toute sa génération, mais en plus, il est le roi, il est celui qui aurait dû mener ce combat ? C’est le combat de sa vie, mais il sait que ce combat est au-dessus de ses forces, il a besoin d’un héros, mais il veut tout de même participer et propose ses richesses, ses armes et sa propre fille en mariage.
Sommes-nous des Saül ? Nous savons que le combat est impossible à gagner… Nous le savons parce que nous avons perdu tant et tant de fois… combien en avons-nous sur notre liste ? Nous connaissons bien l’ennemi, nous y mettons toute notre volonté, tous les moyens à notre disposition… au premier janvier, nous prendrons de bonnes résolutions qui s’effriteront, comme elles l’ont fait toutes les années passées…
Eliab, ou un de ses frères ?
Saül n’est pas le seul grand de ce texte… Nous y voyons aussi les trois fils aînés d’Isaï (Jessé). Eliab, l’aîné, Abinadab le deuxième et Shamma, le troisième.
Eux aussi sont de grands hommes forts ! Souvenez-vous de la visite de Samuel chez Isaï pour choisir le futur roi… Il voit Eliab et pense : « Certainement, celui que l’Éternel désigne par onction est ici devant lui. » Mais l’Éternel dit à Samuel : « Ne prête pas attention à son apparence et à sa grande taille, car je l’ai rejeté. »
Et lorsque David s’interroge sur pourquoi on laisse ce Goliath insulter l’armée du Dieu vivant, Eliab se met en colère. Le texte nous dit : « Il fut enflammé de colère contre lui. »
Ne connaissez-vous pas ce sentiment ? Votre problème vous colle à la peau. Vous traînez cela depuis des années et voici qu’un jeune présomptueux (enfin, c’est le point de vue d’Eliab) vous dit : “et tu vas continuer comme ça pendant longtemps ? Encore combien de temps vas-tu continuer de te cacher… de te mentir à toi-même pour ne pas avoir à combattre franchement ?” Cela peut être quelqu’un de votre famille, un frère, une sœur dans la foi, ou la Parole de Dieu elle-même qui vous montre ce qui ne va pas dans votre vie, et la moutarde vous monte au nez. Vous vous mettez en colère. Pourquoi ? Parce que vous avez tout misé sur vous-même et que le fait que l’on pointe vos échecs vous détruit, parce que tout dans votre vie est basé sur ce que vous êtes censé être… Eliab était le fils aîné, il était fort, c’était un bel homme… mais devant Goliath, il ne veut absolument pas reconnaître qu’il a déjà perdu le combat… et sa colère masque sa honte, son désarroi…
Saül sait qu’il n’est pas de taille, mais il veut participer au combat. Il n’est pas résolu à perdre.
Eliab sait qu’il n’est pas de taille, mais ne peut pas admettre que quelqu’un d’autre puisse mener le combat… Il est résolu à perdre.
Vous vous mettez en colère. Pourquoi ? Parce que vous avez tout misé sur vous-même et que le fait que l’on pointe vos échecs vous détruit, parce que tout dans votre vie est basé sur ce que vous êtes censé être…
David ?
C’est le personnage au cœur de cette histoire. Il est l’élu de Dieu… il vient d’être choisi comme roi… il ne règne pas encore, mais déjà, il a reçu l’Esprit de Dieu sur lui…
Par sa conduite, il se démarque de ses frères, il est à leur service. Ils sont sur le front, mais lui les ravitaille, il leur porte de la part de son père de quoi se nourrir. Il fait aussi attention à eux en portant 10 fromages à leur responsable au front…
Mais là où sa conduite se démarque vraiment de tous ceux qu’il entoure, c’est :
Qu’il est horrifié que l’on puisse laisser quelqu’un insulter l’armée de Dieu… et qu’il ne montre aucune peur…
Qu’il rend gloire à Dieu par son combat.
Qu’il terrasse définitivement l’ennemi.
Alors qui suis-je face au géant ?
Alors, je vais peut-être vous décevoir… mais je dois vous le dire… nous ne sommes pas David et nous ne devrions pas être Saül, Eliab ou un de ses frères.
Nous ne sommes pas David et c’est une bonne nouvelle.
La bonne nouvelle, c’est que le véritable David, c’est Jésus. C’est lui le héros qui combat le géant.
Comme David, Jésus est le roi serviteur prêt à mener le combat.
Comme David, Jésus est le seul qui se soit tenu face à face pour affronter la puissance surhumaine du péché, de la mort et de l’enfer… qui soit horrifié par le mal tout en n’ayant aucune crainte face à lui.
Comme David, Jésus a vaincu définitivement celui qui terrorisait son peuple. Comme David, Jésus partage avec son peuple les fruits de sa victoire.
David, c’est Jésus ! Ce n’est pas nous ! Mais cela ne nous dit toujours pas dans quelle position nous sommes pour vaincre.
Nous sommes le peuple qui crie victoire à la suite de son roi
La fin du récit nous éclaire :
Voyant que leur héros était mort, les Philistins prirent la fuite. Les hommes d’Israël et de Juda se levèrent, poussèrent des cris et les poursuivirent jusque dans la vallée et jusqu’aux portes d’Ekron. Les Philistins blessés à mort tombèrent sur le chemin de Shaaraïm jusqu’à Gath et Ekron.
La bonne nouvelle, c’est que le véritable David, c’est Jésus. C’est lui le héros qui combat le géant. Comme David, Jésus est le roi serviteur prêt à mener le combat.
Les Israélites mirent fin à leur poursuite et revinrent piller le camp.
Nous sommes le peuple qui a peur, qui est impuissant et qui crie victoire à la suite de son roi.
Parce que nous croyons que la victoire est définitivement acquise par Christ à la croix, nous pouvons nous battre contre un ennemi en déroute… parce que nous savons par la foi que le péché n’a plus de prise sur nous, alors nous pouvons nous saisir de toutes les armes de la foi et nous battre à la suite de Christ…
Nous ne pouvons pas lutter, mais Christ l’a fait à la croix ! Notre combat est celui de nous approprier cette victoire par la foi. C’est quand le peuple de Dieu voit que le combat est remporté et que l’ennemi est en déroute qu’il part à sa suite. C’est notre part ! Connaître toujours plus l’œuvre du Christ pour faire grandir notre foi et être victorieux à la suite de Jésus-Christ.
